100 years after the sensational premier of The Rite of Springscandalized Parisian audiences, the music to Stravinsky’s ballet masterpiece has not lost its primal effect.  Its electrifying melodies and rhythms will close the season with a bang. Hear it live along with Britten’s stormy Sea Interludes and Millsaps alumnus Samuel Jones’ Trumpet of the Swan based on stories from The Golden Apples by Eudora Welty.

Don’t miss world famous violinist Midori as she joins forces with the ASO to close our season in unforgettable fashion. Midori performs Tchaikovsky’s celebrated Violin Concerto in a pairing of two inimitable favorites which also connects with the season’s opener, in that it was inspired by Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole. Adding to the festive feel of the program is Mozart’s frothy and iconic overture to the Marriage of Figaro, which defies any listener not to smile. Closing the program is Brahms’s final and incredible 4th symphony- a work of stunning beauty and depth that grows out of the most simple of gestures, a falling then rising line. A sense of yearning and urgency underlie the work as counterpoint adds flavor and intensity to sublime lyricism. An almost overwhelming final movement harkens back to an earlier time in music in a masterstroke combination of the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic.

The ULM Horn Choir formed a few years ago by Dr. James Boldin, Professor of Horn at ULM in Monroe, will be performing again this year in the Emy-Lou Biedenharn Recital Hall on campus. The group includes ULM students, local and area high school students and teachers, and other horn players in the area who play professionally. James Boldin conducts and I have the pleasure of playing with these outstanding members whose love of the horn and everything horn is obvious.

The music has been arranged for 4 to 8 Horns and will be played by the largest ensemble complement since its inception, 18-20 performers!
